I found this fair-condition ex-library softcover at the Used Book Superstore, and couldn't resist it; it's about a young traveler who, for some reason, is wandering the world with a coffin on her back (!). The TV Tropes page for the book compares it to Kino's Journey, another young-traveler-wandering-the-earth series, though from the artwork alone this one looks a good deal quirkier...
Later: Very quirky indeed, but also very charming - often funny, sometimes dark, very enjoyable. We see Kuro, with her coffin and her bat-sidekick and, eventually, two little girls whom she rescued along the way. [They're pretty unusual too, but gosh, are they cute...] The travels seem to involve a mostly-pre-industrial world, yet there's a fellow who zips around on a motorcycle. [He says "call me Kei", and I wonder if he's meant to be an expy of Kino - that'd be an interesting crossover!]
Why the coffin, what's with the black stain, what happened to the professor who left the little girls behind - lots of questions, but whether they get answered or not, I'm enjoying the journey.
I also have:
Volume Two
Volume Three
Volume Four

This book has landed itself smack dab in the middle of a pile of manga/graphic novel book trading! :D
I have let the fuse and off it goes, to land soundly on her house. With any luck, it'll go right through the window! This is war lady!! :D :D :D

Woohoo! I got home from a day-trip to the Harbor Islands on this hot summer day to find a Big Box O' Books! (I'm glad to have this one back in hand, as I wanted to re-read the series when Volume 4 comes out.) Many thanks!
