This was an enthralling book with a daring viewpoint: a black man who owns slaves. Jones evokes our sympathy and our ire with his ambiguously drawn characters. The combined effect of their choices is profound and gripping storytelling. The only element that caused intellectual chaffing was that of a large cast. It was at times difficult to keep my bearings as to who was who and what their history was in relation to the story's current events. A gratifying must read.
