This book was interesting and easy-to-read with many short chapters. From the beginning, the reader knows that this mother who is the author does not have the typical American attitude to raising children. As the book progressed, I was rather appalled at the author's method of making her daughters practice musical instruments hours without end. The result was that her daughters were world class musicians winning competitions and performing in impressive venues. However, this stress on endless practicing was coupled with hours and hours of extremely expensive lessons. This author is from a wealthy 'Chinese family. She and her husband are able to afford the best music teachers, expensive private schooling, as well as family vacations all over the world. The author makes many unfavorable comparisons between the Chinese style of raising children and the American style of raising children. She seems to be completely unaware that most parents cannot afford to indulge in the best musical instruction available. At the end of the book, the author seems to come to peace with her daughters, particularly her younger more rebellious daughter. Writing this book is a catalyst for the author's family to discuss issues. However, I do feel as though the author remains clueless about some essential basic parenting issues.

Interesting look at contemporary "Chinese" parenting vs "American" parenting, as the author applied it to her own children. Married to a Jewish White American, Amy tries to apply the chinese style to her two girls. It worked well for one, but was a horrible clash with the other. Reading this wore me out from the Mom's perspective, because the Mom involved herself in everything in minute detail. I can't imagine keeping up that and working too.
This one will travel forward as a rabck.
