Set against the separation process of Bangladesh from Pakistan Anam tells an intriguing family story. The young widow Rehana develops into a sort of liberation heroine against her will, driven by the activities of her two children and by her motherly wish to protect them. As I had only limited knowledge about the events leading to the formation of Bangladesh as an independent country I found this novel quite encouraging to gather some more information about it.
