I caught this book as part of a bookring organised by Miss-R (thanks!).
I all the women in the book had such different personalities, but I suppose the thing they have in common is that they put themselves into the spotlight and played! This is brave in such a masculine world, especially of The Raincoats who leaned to play their instruments on stage!
This book was written in 1994. I wonder who would be chosen to be in a similar book today...

Thanks Miss-R and Balham! the book has been perfectly safe since when i received it ! i found out today that i'd forgotten to make the entry so i won't keep you waiting any longer...
I read already some bits of several interviews and record the songs ! I'll come and put some translation of one of them later on ! i could not understand the lyrics of the songs that were already on the tape, (and i confess that i dont listen often "punk" rock music) i know it's a bit of work to write them here, but if you feel like doing it, well i'd be glad :-)

Journal Entry 5 by Balham on Thursday, February 19, 2004
Hi roxibulle

I've listed the lyrics of the two songs I put on the tape below. I chose them because they were both mentioned in the book - sorry if it was too punk for you!

X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage Up Yours!
Bind me tie me
Chain me to the wall I wanna be a slave
To you all

Oh bondage up yours
Oh bondage no more
Oh bondage up yours
Oh bondage no more

Chain-store chain-smoke
I consume you all
Chain-gang chain-mail
I don't think at all

Chorus

Thrash me crash me
Beat me till I fall
I wanna be a victim
For you all

Chorus

The Raincoats (originally the Kinks) - Lola
I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
[LP version: Coca-Cola]
See-oh-el-aye cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
El-oh-el-aye Lola la-la-la-la Lola

Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy won't you come home with me
Well I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
La-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola

i listen to them again and enjoy!
=-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-
Ok, the book is on its way !... sorry for the large delay... :-/
I love you all and nothing's too punk for me (just kidding;-) but i don't have the same musical culture! Anyway, i'm proud of saying that local punk rock fed my highschool years and then.. well ... time and people dropped more music :-)
So here's one of the songs I add on the tape:
Christine Salem

Camélia

There's neighbourhood in Saint Denis
People don't like it
Why you say that ? don't believe
that this neighbourhood is bad and dirty

It's called Camélia
It's like anyplace
It's healthy and hot and moving and full
when we play Maloya late at night

people like to talk
said-that-did-that
Should know us
before speaking about our place

Ile de la Réunionthe language is "kreol"... not quite like french but understandable, all this is from my poor ears so there might be some mistakes(anyone?). trad.rythm Maloya, played by slaves, prohibited then, and publically inexistant until 1981!

Arrived today! The stamps are gorgeous; I'll make a bookmark out of them.
I've enjoyed the songs on the tape . . . I can add just two?! It's going to be hard to choose. :-)
Book is very good so far, lots of different opinions.
Thanks for sharing, everyone!

"I think everybody's got to be 3,000 miles away from their mum before they can really start a revolution. . . . If you decide from the beginning that you're not going to change the world, you might as well just shut up, have a spliff, stay home and watch telly." --Ellyot Dragon, Sister George

Very entertaining and thought-provoking book. The fact that it's almost ten years old makes it more interesting. Courtney Love, Björk, and Liz Phair are still making music. Veruca Salt still exists but in a different version. I'd never heard of Echobelly, Sister George, Huggy Bear, or Doll--not sure whether they have faded away or are just too cool for me to be familiar with.

The Veruca Salt chapter was good, but it's sad to think that one of the women (Nina? Louise? I forget which) left the band . . . because the two of them were in love with the same guy . . . who was also in the band. Not very feminist, but that's how life is sometimes.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for music by Echobelly and Sister George.

As for adding to the tape, I was tempted to include songs by Sonic Youth, Veruca Salt, Belly, Liz Phair, Björk, or the Breeders, since I have albums by all of them. But I decided to include songs by Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney instead, because I'm sure they would be interviewed if Volume 2 of this book was written.

I have twinkpuddin's address and will mail this out this week. Thanks again for the chance to read a book I would never have found otherwise.

Hi again,
Here are lyrics for the songs I added:

Let's Run

Oh we could rock
Or we could bomb
Or we could try
Like super hard

Or we could come
Or we could lose
Or we could totally
Totally, totally freak you

I wanna spread my dementia
I wanna knock it off the line
Give me attention
Every day and every night

We could suck
"They might improve"
We get our grades from
Professor You

Or we could fly
Demystified
Or we could please you
All night

I wanna spread my dementia
I wanna knock it off the line
Give me attention
Every day and every night
Don't want no crusty bullshit
No crap or attitude
Just wanna get electric tonight
You know with you you you you

Or we could
Or we could
Or we could
Or we could fail fail fail
So?

______________

"Oh!"

If you’re tired of the big so so
Get yourself into some self control
Play the game by putting on the brakes
Slow down and make less mistakes
Nobody lingers like your hands on my heart
Nobody figures like you figured me out
I would be lying if I didn't say to you
No one comes close don't worry you got it!
(There's fire if you want it let me know,
I'm sick and I'm tired of letting go)
The way I feel when you call my name
Makes me go crazy to sane
The way I feel when you’re close to me
Finally not drifting out to sea
Come on now I wish you would
I’m the one who makes you feel good
Never mind those things they say
They don’t know it but I’m here to stay

(You can see a picture of Sleater-Kinney and listen to the MP3 of the song by going to their record label’s site: http://www.killrockstars.com/bands/sleater-kinney/audio/ )

Just came in the mail! Can't wait to read and listen to the tape!

I enjoyed this book on a number of levels: it spoke to me as a women, I felt like it educated and informed me, and it was plain entertaining. I agree with Rampallion that its being written ten years ago makes it all the more interesting. I feel like women in the music industry is still an issue, for some reason, but can't seem to figure out why. Since I will be graduating in May with a degree in Music Business and plan to get a job in the biz, it really hits home. And, I really liked how the tape was going so far! I decided to include The Murmurs and Peaches (complete with references to Blondie and Chrissie Hynde) on the tape. Have jms1970us' address and will send it out this week. Thanks Miss-R! An excellent idea for a ring!
