I only went to donate things to the charity shop - but accidently made a few book purchases too...

Found this in Sense (Walworth Road) for 50p. It's on (at least) one of the lists I'm trying to read my way through. Can't wait to read.

I just knew I would love this book before I even started it. I found it an interesting journey with a family through hardships and beyond, all brilliantly observed by the teenage daughter. I felt bad for poor Stephen and Cassandra. I wish there was a follow up to find out how all their lives carried on.

Sorry for the delay in journaling, they tried to deliver last Saturday and we were in Torquay for the weekend and I could not get to the post office until today. Thank you for this extra book off my wish list.

26 May 14 - I wasn't sure about this book to start with, it seemed a bit odd, a penniless family living in a run down castle. And for a long time I couldn't work how old Cassandra was, she comes across as being much younger than 17. But maybe that's the point of the book you can see that she has grow to make a hard decision at the end. It was kind of left open for a second book, and it would have been nice to find out what happened after. The dad was the only character that I could not get my head around. I enjoyed her descriptions of lying about and daydreaming about all sorts of thing - I was a bit of a daydreamer myself!

I loved this book, Cassandra is a really good narrator and her family are wonderfully quirky.
