Powerful earthy novel about Joseph Wayne and his land - the claim he stakes in a remote valley of central California.
On its way to gunmarga.
Thank you maid-of-kent. The book was in my mailbox today. It's so nice to find a parcel and not only commercial paper and bills in the mailbox.
Backside: This powerful, earthy novel tells the story of Joseph Wayne and his land - the claim he stakes in a remote valley of central California. Struggling to tame and cultivate the harsh country, Joseph feels at one with the soil as he builds home for his family. But the elements are not to be tamed, and it is only finally - and tragically - that Joseph finds unity with nature.

The story of Joseph and his quest to build a large farm with beef cattle begins a little tentative but when his brothers are coming happens the more. The religious will be problems. Joseph worships nature, and finally he becomes alone in an increasingly desert-like area.
It was interesting to read this book of the 1962 winner of the Nobel Prize in literature, although I do not like so much grief and misfortune that this novel was about.
