I read a review of this book in the "Captain Comic" column, and ordered a copy at once. It's a hardcover graphic novel about Irish emigrants in New York, told in three alternating timelines: a woman and her child in 1870, waiting for her husband to join them; a young man in 1960, hoping to become an actor; and a business mogul in 2010, jetting to New York to track down the history of a song that inspired him. The details of characters and settings (in the artwork and as sketched by the dialogue) are marvelous, whether revealing the crowded conditions and grinding effort to survive of the 19th-century immigrants or showing the ups and downs of show business in the '60s - and then there are the romantic complications, some sweet and some painful, and all serving to drive the plot. While it was clear from the context of the 2010 storyline that the original character was going to inspire a song, the way in which that came about - and how it came to be known at all - was quite a surprise... In fact, there were many surprising plot twists, and I enjoyed every one of them. Recommended!
