Penman writes about the medieval world with vigor, compassion, and clarity. Just the mention of her name sends frissons of delight up the spine of historical fiction buffs. They know she will deliver a rich tapestry of a book, researched with meticulous accuracy and blazing with strong personalities.

In this book she has triumphed in capturing the elusive essence and the blazing glory of the English king called Lionheart!

One of the most helpful things in this Penman book is that in the front she provides a well developed "Cast of Characters as of 1189." It's an immense help in keeping track of who's who. There are so many countries and a myriad of royal families involved in this volume.

You'll also find easy to follow schematic maps showing the main geography discussed in the book.

In the back of the book is a fascinating "Author's Note" where Penman discusses some of the dilemmas in her stories. She seems very committed to uncovering the "real" Richard Lionheart who may be far from what most of us have heard about him.

This is a 574 page book which deserves an open-minded and loyal reader.

Susan Kay Penman is a master-crafts person who stands head and shoulders above most writers of historical fiction.
