Synopsis (Credit: Back cover)
On a rainy afternoon on Killiney Hill a young man walking, without his overcoat, happens upon a woman gazing out over Dublin bay, standing perilously close to the edge. From their testy encounter develops a remarkable friendship which will enable each to face afresh their very different, damaged pasts, and to look, however tentatively, towards the future.
(Bought second-hand at the CAFDA Charity Bookshop, Warwick Street, Claremont.)
A quick, uplifting read. Life goes on. I liked the wit and some of the characterisation, but a few things didn't quite work for me: to my mind, not all the character developments were convincing, a touch of predictability crept in, and, though the book was mostly gingerbread, it left a slightly sugary aftertaste. I do suspect the book will have popular appeal, though, and it should thus do well as a travelling book.
A pleasant surprise: On the last page I discovered some scribblings: star ratings from various readers of the book (snapshot included; click to enlarge). It must have been read by a book club or similar group. So, this book has clearly established its travelling credentials already. If you look at the number of journallers, bear in mind that the tally should really be 9 more.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
The Gingerbread Woman is on her way to Horinkie and possibly, most fittingly, to the Land of Lebkuchen!
Almost ready to travel and looking forward to reading the book. Thank you, Stoepbrak!
The book arrived in the Land of Lebkuchen and it was an easy and quick read.
I picked the book out of interest in the 'remarkable friendship' part. That didn't really work out for me. But I enjoyed following the encounter of two persons with a very different cultural background. It certainly helps you to get on, but doesn't necessarily lead to a true understanding. Suprisingly this is possible even on a small European island.
The story reflects also Na Trioblóidí, the conflict between Britain and Ireland, between Protestants and Catholics.
