Before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire to go back to the USA, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. This is the account of his tour. The book starts out well, but after a time the jokes get more and more lame. Bryson tries very hard to be funny. He tries too hard and gets irritating.

Very humorous book. You can't help smiling when he describes English people and their habits, as it is all so true! I am giving this book back to Nicole.

I sat up most of the night reading this book. Some bits definitely did make me smile. When the author talks about English people in the beginning of the book, I can definitely see myself in them, or my mother, aunt, friend, or man who lived down the road etc. I liked it when he wrote that he was definitely starting to pick up some English expressions, like when someone brought him a cup of tea he found himself saying "Oooh lovely!"
I did make some notes as I read through this book, but I cannot find them right now. I have no idea where I put the piece of paper I wrote them on.
However, if I ever find it again, I will add more to this review.

UPDATE
I found my notes:
It was a really enjoyable read and very humorous. I loved Bill's first impressions of England and the English and I had to smile because it was all true! There were some parts in this book that I really liked, like when he trips over his walking stick and turns the TV off with his head! He mentions that he was curious to know how he had done it in case he decided to make it a party piece! Also where he describes how 3 dozen English people are having a picnic on a mountain top in an ice storm and he found it so unusual and mad that he thought, "God I love this country".
Lastly on one page he is wondering why a grapefruit was called a grapefruit. He describes it as an unfamiliar fruit that is yellow and the size of a cannonball and tastes sour and he wonders if someone was presented with it, way-back-when, and thought to himself "Well you know, it rather puts me in mind of a grape".....and maybe that's how it got its name. He says "I don't know about you but I don't believe I would think this"!!! It is just so funny! Loved it.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

After my having been given a 2012 World Book Night copy of this book, I decided to release this hard back copy. I left it on the book shelf in a OBCZ in The Purple Dog Pub in Colchester, Essex, UK. If no one has taken it by the time the BCUK Unconvention is on in September, (in this same town), I think the Colchester BookCrossers will take it off this shelf for the book buffet and the wild-release walk, (if it is not taken from the book buffet by someone for personal reading).
So I'm wishing good luck to this book. It certainly entertained me for several hours while I had it!!

If you are reading here, then I want to tell you that this is a. FREE . book, and there are no catches! It is now yours! Please read on.....
If you are the finder of this book it would be nice if you could leave a message here to say that you have it. Do not worry because I don't want the book back. It is yours to keep if you want it. I just want to know it is now in safe hands.
