This is the story of a 26 year old woman living in Boston who loves kung fu movies and works as a copy editor at a graphic design company.

When I first started reading this I thought, great, another lame "chick" book. I kept reading and discovered this story had a bit more depth to it than most of the typical chick lit books that seem to be all the rage. It isn't great literature and the plot is somewhat predictable but it is a nice light read.

More fluff to help me recover from this semester. :-) Thanks, alrescate!

1/21/04: I've lost this one in a bet with Eriko1908, so I'm bumping it up in the TBR list.

A while back I heard somebody complaining that this book had too much graphic sex in it, and I'm not a big fan of that sort of thing, so I was half expecting not to finish this book. Yeah, I did some skimming, but considering the context of Nicci's last encounter with Rob, and the complete lack of real meaning in their relationship, I think it is important for some of those scenes to be just about the sex.

Mainly I think I liked this book because I indentify so well with Nicci. Forget Bridget Jones, this is the perfect chick lit read for the Gen X underachiever.

Tomorrow I'll mail this out to Erica.

This one was another that caught my attention BEFORE it made it into the TBR pile…kinda makes me feel a little guilty about the books I’ve held longer…but books will be read when the time is right, and they won’t jump into your hands before they are good & ready to!! (at least that is what I believe)

I really enjoyed this one…I, too, was bothered by the sex between Nicci & Rob at one point…but then I also realized that this is the way it had to be…I found myself very jealous of Nicci at the end of this one…I wanted to be able to make the choices she made…I want to be able to take a big step in my life…maybe someday I will find courage…maybe someday somebody will speak to me the way her grandpa spoke to her…and hopefully I will be listening!! I wish her all the luck in the world!! :o)

As is my habit, I like to share passages from a book when I really can relate to them…this one had a number of them:

This is an outright lie, of course. Everyone is always interested in hooking up with someone. Sure, we like to pretend that we aren’t really looking, but we’re all looking just the same. We’re not exempt from evolution. And evolution tends to produce animals whose main goal is perpetuation of the species. So, yeah, we’re all looking. It’s just whether or not the looking should turn into the hassle of mating and trying to get along with another human being for the rest of your life. ~ page 3

”I was lonely,” he said.
Lonely. No one is ever lonely. They’re bored. They’re sad. They’re depressed. They’re horny. But never, ever lonely. Being lonely means no one likes you. Being lonely means you don’t have any friends. Being lonely means you’re…alone.
~ page 23

The moment isn’t a piece of time, it’s a question. A realization. A trauma. The moment comes when you look up andyou’re your life stretching out for seventy more years. And there, in front of you, like a giant roadblock, is the question: Is this the life good enough for the next seventy years? But maybe that’s the easy question. The next logical question--Can I live like this?--is the killer. Because it isn’t a yes or no kind of question. It’s a do or die kind of question. ~ page 107

From the moment the doctor (or nurse) slapped me on the ass and forced me to take that first breath, I’ve been making decisions. And each decision pulls up a new set of variables and starts me down the path to more decisions, which in turn create additional new variables requiring even more decisions… ~ page 180-181

Okay…I’ll stop there…and yes I did leave a little bit of the book left for future readers to enjoy themselves…I just couldn’t resist sharing!!

I’m holding this one to drop into a chick-lit box that should be coming my way soon. Hope everybody enjoys!! :o)

I absolutely loved this! I didn't care for Rob at all and some Nicci's action made me go mad but hey, it's chicklit. In the back reads like this: Made me want to run out and rent a Kung Fu movie. I couldn't agree more:D I'm thrilled that I picked this up from the meetup, I was pondering against it awhile.

I've grown pretty tired of chick lit but this was quite enjoyable. The kung fu stuff seemed a bit superfluous, but otherwise a good read. Thanks for sharing!
