From the back:
Set in the turbulent times of twelfth-century England when civil war, famine, religious strife and battles over royal succession tore lives and families apart, The pillars of the earth tells the story of the building of a magnificent cathedral.
Against this richly imagined backdrop, filled with intrigue and treachery, Kenn Follet drwas the reader irresistibly into a wonderful epic of family drama, violent conflict and unswerving ambition. From humble stonemasons to imperious monarchs, the dreams, labours and loves of his characters come vividly to life. The pillars of the earth is, without doubt, a masterpiece - and has proved to be one of the most popular books of our time.

Great book with lots of information. I really did care about the main figures, well, except for William though. If you're interested in building ways in the Middle Ages this is a great book to imagine things. Huge respect for common people that lived back then - don't know how they did it.

I just received this book from Bloedengel. We met up in Antwerp. Thanks for the book and nice meeting you and the kids again, Bloedengel!
I just started another ring of about 900 pages so it might take me a little while before I can start this one.

I have finally finished this book. It took me a long while to get through it, not only because it's a huge book but also because I have recently moved and I was still adapting to life in a different place.
I really liked the book though. It gives a lively account of how life was in these times against the backdrop of the cathedral. If I had to say anything negative about it I would say that the ending is just a little too 'neat'. Every little storyline gets its perfect little ending and that wasn't needed I think. But never the less, I loved it! Thanks for sharing it with me, Boekentrol.
I have already contacted lunatum and she asked to be skipped for now as she was too busy. I will contact Esme-Weatherwax.

Esme-Weatherwax has asked if I could keep the book until the end of January, because she'll be away from home until then. For me that is absolutely no problem, but if there are other interested readers out there it might be a good idea to send this book to others first. If there are none, then I'd be happy to keep it until Esme-Weatherwax is home again.

Thanks. It may be awhile before I can get to this tome but it looks very enjoyable.
