I believe this is one of the 1001 books one must read ... but I haven't yet. I sometimes struggle with Roth and his generation, and am not usually excited by politic-y stuff BUT I usually enjoy counterfactual history, so I'm looking forward to reading opinions of this one in order to find out if I should get a copy for me.
In the NSS bag for my Convention partner. Enjoy!
I am awash with Bookcrossing-fuzzies. Thank you so much for a fantastic NSS pack.
I've had this on my wishlist for a good while (I think it was a possible book of the month in 2008), so thank you very much!

I struggled a little with this at the beginning but was completely sucked in by page 50 (my turn-off limit). The initial paranoia was unsettling, but the building of the threatening atmosphere is masterfully done, and Roth skilfully inserts adult insights to a true child's perspective without diluting the alien-ness of either the situation to the child, or the past to us.
Someone once said 'The past is another country, they do things differently there'. One of the books best points is to contrast true American history with the narrative and see what is divergent and what truly might have been...

Given to me by microsquid.
Very interesting and frightening what-if novel, but it also shows that democracy doesn't happen automatically. It needs the active participation of the citizens.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Will be released at monthly meetup.
If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. We would love it, if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.
