The comedian’s early years, from the time she moved with her family from Iran to England, with refugee status and a father who was wanted by the Ayatollah’s regime and was at serious risk, yet kept publishing satirical articles and sheltering his fellow-countrypeople. The politics are all seen from a very well portrayed child’s perspective, and the fact that for every struggle to explain fishfingers to her mum there’s a racist incident at school or a menacing phone call give this book an edge and emotional depth that I wasn’t entirely expecting. A good read.

Fleeing Iran because at real risk from the new regime, Shappi Korshandi found herself and her brother in an alien environment. We moved far from our extended family when I was about the same age, so I recognised many of the events and feelings she described - although I cannot claim to have suffered the same degree of culture shock or fear for those left behind. In spite of the sadnesses, little Shappi is resilient and irrepressible. She does not spare us gory details of which she only became aware as an adult, and the descriptions of what happened to her uncles should be required reading for anyone who has made light of people leaving their homes because 'they don't like the politics' of whoever is in power.
