An interesting mystery - with a very nice twist at the end.

Publisher's description:
Nothing is ever quite at peace on Scotland’s Black Isle—the Traveling people are forever at odds with the locals, the fishermen have nothing in common with the farmers, and the villages have no connection with the town. But when two deaths occur on the same day, involving the same families from the same estate—the Black Isle seems as forbidding as its name.

Joanne Ross, typist at the Highland Gazette, is torn whether to take on the plum task of reporting on these murders—after all, the woman at the center of both crimes is one of her closest friends. Joanne knows the story could be her big break, and for a woman in the mid-1950s—a single mother, no less—good work is hard to come by.

But the investigation by the staff on the Gazette reveals secrets that will forever change this quiet, remote part of the Highlands. The ancient feudal order is crumbling, loyalties are tested, friendships torn apart, and the sublime beauty of the landscape will never seem peaceful again.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Taking this to Second Meetup. We can't leave books here so you have to get this before we leave at 8:30. Look for the Free Books sign on the table. We'd love to meet you.
You have to remember that this takes place in the sixties and the War is still clear in people's minds - one of the characters is a war widow - and things were different then. The newspaper which comes out weekly is the chief source of verifiable information so the reporters have to get it all and get it right. I enjoyed this, including the newspaper office which certainly was similar to the one I worked in in the late fifties, albeit on a different continent. Enjoyed the character for the most part and found the class divisions interesting.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I really liked this book, and now want to read more from A.D. Scott. The time period is the late fifties, and life if tough in this small Scottish town. The different groups, the farmers, the fishermen, the travellers and the old feudal families in this small town, have as limited contact with each as possible, but sometimes those lines are crossed. Joanne Ross is a typist at the Highland Gazette, but gets to stretch her journalistic skills which leads her own personal conflicts.

I would love to read more from this author.
