I got this book and a bunch of others from bookstogive. Thank you!
When the Enterprise rushes to the aid of a Vulcan ship and discovers the entire crew dead, they aren't shocked to find a Klingon vessel circling a planet nearby. With the history of the two groups, it seems only reasonable for the peace treaty to have failed. The problem is that there's no proof that the Klingons did anything to the dead crew. As Kirk and co. start trying to solve the mystery, it soon becomes clear that both the human and Klingon crews have something worse to deal with. On board, the crew seems to be losing their mind and coming dangerously close to mutiny. Fighting their own inner demons, they have to figure out what it is about this planet that is affecting them so strangely.
This was a fun romp and very reminiscent of a classic Trek episode, from the melodramatic fight scenes to the obvious moral of the story. I don't think I've read any of Vardeman's books before, but his is a name I'll have to keep an eye out for. Some of the characterization was a little off, but it can mostly be excused due to alien mind control. (The exception is Uhura, who is portrayed as increasingly ditzy, despite the fact that in TOS she's been rather snappish and short-tempered when affected by metal interference.)

This book is one of the starting volumes for Round II of The Otherworldly Bookbook
This sounded like fun, so I'm claiming it from the bookbox. [While the recent reboot to the Star Trek franchise had some good points, I'm still fondest of the original. For some nostalgic fun, check out the Planet of Hats web-comic, which summarizes the plots of the original series episodes in comic form!]
Later: I agree that this was a lot of fun, very much in keeping with the tone of the original series - though as the whole "mind/emotions controlled by alien being/substance" concept was used several times, I'd have thought the crew would be quicker to pick up on it this time around!
I took the book with me on a trip to Texas, where my nephew read and enjoyed it.
