I actually finished this months ago. I took my time reading it and I loved it. It has an enganging story with unexpected turns that is difficult to describe without spoiling. I very much liked the characters, with their complicated relationships and interactions, and the writing too, but even more I was captured by the athmosphere. It has a "gothic" style, dark and romantic, with the main characters obsessed with solitude, grief and literature. It's by no means flawless (some plot elements don't work perfectly and it can become a bit slow at times) and I'm not sure everyone could enjoy it -but at least three of us here did!

This is a literature related book that really touched me and one of the few really worth keeping in my PC.

Change of plan -this book will get to travel the world after all. I chose it as my favourite for Marsala's 2013 roundabout. I did buy a second copy, but I gave it to a friend as a Christmas present. I would love to see this one travelling and being read by other Bookcrossers.

All your comments are welcomed, let me know what you thought. Feel free to make any notes in pencil. Happy new year and happy roundabout!

The book is here. Thank you Merolia for the nice card and...the chocolate! How did you know I had a weakness for the this particular mint-filled one ? :)

Considering the back cover I'm looking forward to starting the reading (without pencil notes at that).

To tell the truth I read it on the spot and didn't go to sleep very soon. Perfect choice for my taste even if it's a bit far-fetched. Thank you Merolia.

Fantastic! This was on TV over Christmas and I recorded it but wanted to read the book first so I got it out of the library. Unfortunately I never opened a single book on my two weeks holidays and it had to be returned to the library unread because someone else had requested it. Looks like I can cancel my request to get it again!

An excellent choice for the roundabout. It could have been my favourite too. I really found it to be a book a I couldn't put down. I do most of my reading on the bus but also read this walking between the bus stop and work and actually read it at home. I hated having to stop and tonight, it is now 9pm, but I had to finish it when I got in from work - I'm so hungry. Maybe there were a few bits a little far-fetched but I didn't mind. I didn't expect the ending either. Thanks for sending this out.

I really enjoyed this too - thanks Merolia! I love gothic fiction so this was a perfect choice for me. I really liked the 'tale within a tale' frame, all the twists and the great characters. I also loved the echoes with Jane Eyre which I love.

Will post onwards tomorrow!

Thank you, it arrived safely! It was actually here about a week ago, but I forgot to journal it. I'm looking forward to reading this book, it's one that I've been wanting to read anyway.

Great, I get a second chance with this book! My book club read this a few years ago, but I didn't read it at the time, as I had just had a baby and wasn't getting much reading done. It did look good though, so I'm glad it has come my way now.

Well, I definitely enjoyed this book, but I wasn't drawn in to it as much as I expected to be. I think I found it hard to relate to the characters, but I still liked the story and I'm glad I read it. Good choice for the roundabout. It's now on its way to grovalskii.

Great book! Quite a bit of twists and turns toward the end. Very well written. One of those book that are hard to put down.
Thanks for sharing this, Merolia!

Received today along with the other book from this roundabout.

I enjoyed the reach vocabulary immensely. The tense atmosphere of the present day narration suited me as well. I didn't care about the part of the story set in the past at first. I ended up liking Hester and other "secondary characters". I was a little disappointed that Jane Eyre homage turned out to be almost a retelling.
My favourite bits were the ones where dreams and reality were so tight together that you almost started believing something supernatural is going on.

Thanks to this book I watched the movie with Vanessa Redgrave, made in 2013.

There is magic and there are stories within stories in Diane Setterfield's writing. I have finished breathlessly the last half of the book, in a night and a morning. I can totally see why someone would choose it as their best read of the year. The twists and turns and branching of the stories, the magic of twos and threes, the ever-reoccurring twinness. I felt the book get a grip on me, and it never let me go, just like one of Vida Winter's would have. There is surreal and there is gruesomeness in the story, and there is loss, and there is justice. So many characters are sick and twisted and broken. Yet you read on.
