A woman's body is found on a frozen lake, bearing the marks of grisly torture. Inspector Anna-Maria Mella knows she needs help with the case - the woman was a key player in a mining company whose tentacles reach across the globe. Lawyer Rebecka Martinsson is desperate to get back to work, to feel alive again after a case that almost destroyed her both physically and emotionally.
Soon she is delving into the affairs of the victim's boss, the founder of Kallis Mining, whose relationship with the dead woman was complex and obsessive. Martinsson and Mella are about to uncover a dark and tangled drama of family secrets, twisted sexuality, and corruption on a massive scale.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but I just knew from looking at this that I would enjoy it - & I was right!
It was one of those books that drew me in from the start & had me hooked. I liked the way began with Rebecka's case notes, giving us a little of her history & then next thing there's a half naked man sitting on the ice fishing & the drama begins!
For me the story had everything you could want: a grisly murder, great characters (want to read more about both Rebecka & Anna-Maria), dysfunctional families, obsessions, suspense & even a touch of the supernatural (well how else can you explain Ester?)....& the first page of each chapter being illustrated was an unusual bonus.
All-in-all I loved it & will be putting this author on my wishlist :o)

Yes, I've been a good girl and kept my wishlist and 1001 list updated at all times.
This one is a new author to me, very intriguing.

The book had an easy writing style but I found it difficult to get into, got a bit confused with all the characters at times. As this is book three, it might have been better for me to have started from the beginning of the series; I might have stood a better chance of understanding the main/recurring characters better. Overall, I think this was too dark a mystery for me, I need more investigation and less gruesomeness.
