Piers Anthony is probably best known for his Xanth series, but this was a slightly deeper book. Probably still in the category of "brain candy", I found this a very fast, enjoyable read that kept my interest the whole way through.

The novel is set sometime in Earth's future, where magic been "discovered" much as science was and the two now go hand in hand. Flying carpet companies war with car manufacturers through clever ad campaigns. Throughout this, evil has become more prevalent. Hell now has its very own advertising campaign as well as evil vies for more souls. While Satan may be cheating, God refuses to sink to the same level and does nothing to influence the masses.

Despite all the hoopla going on around him, Zane is simply trying to make enough money to survive. Giving up, he opts for suicide. And that's when things get tricky. As he puts the muzzle of the gun in his mouth, Death (literally) walks through his apartment door. Startled, Zane kills Death and finds himself forced to take up the now-open position as Grim Reaper. But that's just the beginning...

Offered once again in the Science Fiction and Fantasy bookrelay!

I had the best intentions of reading this (even bought the rest of the series at the Friends of the Library book sale), but I'm never going to have enough time to check this out. Moving on to Maurean today...

This is the first book in Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, and my first foray into his writing. The story is an interesting & satirical look at "Death" (as well as a glimpse into the other inarnations of Fate, Time, War and Nature); entertaining on a purely fantastical level, as well as thought-provoking, I enjoyed it quite a bit and imagine I will read the remainder of the series if given the opportunity. (My other-half is a fan, so I imagine that opportunity will present itself!)

This one's been back with me for a while, and it's inching near the top of Mount TBR. Should be off and traveling again soon!

I picked this up on a whim and ended up taking long lunch breaks and losing sleep at night to finish it. It's not a fantastic book, but it's certainly a lot of fun. I've read Piers Anthony before and was always a little turned off by his voluptuous nymphettes - at least that aspect was tuned down here. I'm very curious to see where the series goes from here.

This one's off to Tak Yak to fulfill a wish. Enjoy!
