10 out of 10

Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow! That's all I seem capable of saying after reading this book. I think I'm in "book mourning" again.

I've decided I want a dog like Nifkin, I want to find a friend as awesome (and rich!) as Maxi, and I want to grow up to be Cannie - though I'll skip the name, thanks much.

I wanted to cry sometimes while reading this book because Jennifer Weiner so captured how I've felt thousand of times in my life. My favorite scene by far has to be the group meeting at the center she goes to. I actually read it outloud to my mother while she was driving and I never do that anymore. (She's just not appreciative!) I've been in that situation a time or two myself and I wanted to do exactly what Cannie did. It reminded me of my favorite response to the "You're fat." comments I'll get (namely "WHAT?! You're kidding! When did THAT happen?!")

This book is not-to-be missed! I can't recommend it enough.

I finally got to read this book, and I'm so glad I did! The characters, especially Cannie, were so real. It is so refreshing to read a book like this. I like how it ended also - I don't want to give anything away, but I thought it ended just how it should.

The amazing your-book-fairy saved my bookbox after SueFitz finally unstalled it after five months, and now the box has come back to me with this book in it. Thank you so very much!

2002 Washington Square Press trade paperback. (Originally published in 2001.) Has a readers club guide in the back. Well written & intelligent, but for at least the first half I was annoyed by Cannie's pining for Mr. So Very Wrong. Then I laughed, cried, and laughed some more, so by the end I really liked this book. Read the 1st chapter at jenniferweiner.com.

From Publishers Weekly
It is temping at first but unwise to assume Candace Shapiro is yet another Bridget Jones. Feisty, funny and less self-hating than her predecessor, Cannie is a 28-year-old Philadelphia Examiner reporter preoccupied with her weight and men, but able to see the humor in even the most unpleasant of life's broadsides. Even she is floored, however, when she reads "Good in Bed," a new women's magazine column penned by her ex-boyfriend, pothead grad student Bruce Guberman. Three months earlier, Cannie suggested they take a break—apparently, Bruce thought they were through and set about making such proclamations as, "Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world." Devastated by this public humiliation, Cannie takes comfort in tequila and her beloved dog, Nifkin. Bruce has let her down like another man in her life: Cannie's sadistic, plastic surgeon father emotionally abused her as a young girl, and eventually abandoned his wife and family, leaving no forwarding address. Cannie's siblings suffer, especially the youngest, Lucy, who has tried everything from phone sex to striptease. Their tough-as-nails mother managed to find love again with a woman, Tanya, the gravel-voiced owner of a two-ton loom. Somehow, Cannie stays strong for family and friends, joining a weight-loss group, selling her screenplay and gaining the maturity to ask for help when she faces something bigger than her fears. Weiner's witty, original, fast-moving debut features a lovable heroine, a solid cast, snappy dialogue and a poignant take on life's priorities. This is a must-read for any woman who struggles with body image, or for anyone who cares about someone who does.

From Library Journal
Weiner's first novel should satisfy readers from older teens and above. Cannie Shapiro is in her late twenties, funny, independent, and a talented reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer. After a "temporary" break-up with her boyfriend of three years, she reads his debut column, "Good in Bed," in the women's magazine Moxie. Titled "Loving a Larger Woman," this very personal piece triggers events that completely transform her and those around her. Cannie's adventures will strike a chord with all young women struggling to find their place in the world, especially those larger than a size eight. Despite some events that stretch credulity and a few unresolved issues at the end, this novel follows the classic format of chasing the wrong man when the right one is there all along. Veteran storyteller Maeve Binchy gave us Bennie in Circle of Friends; now Jennifer Weiner gives us Cannie. Look for more books from Weiner.

From Booklist
When Cannie Shapiro, a witty but overweight reporter for the Philadelphia Examiner, opens the latest issue of Moxie, a trendy woman's magazine, she's shocked and horrified to find an opinion piece by her ex-boyfriend, Bruce, that not only talks about their sex life but also about her insecurities about her weight. Hurt and even more insecure, Cannie signs up for an experimental weight-loss program. But then Bruce unexpectedly reenters her life when he phones to tell her of the death of his father. Cannie, who has always grappled with the pain from her own father's desertion of her family, immediately runs to be by his side. Unexpectedly, the two end up sleeping together after the funeral. But it's not the reconciliation Cannie hopes for, and soon Bruce is dating someone else. Depressed, Cannie soon finds their night together had repercussions she had never dreamed of. From there, it's a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, wild success and bitter lows, during which Cannie finds success, peace, and even love. A warm, refreshing story.

This was the first book I've ever read by Jennifer Weiner. I enjoyed the story overall, but felt bored during some parts...maybe the book was to long. I'm currently doing Weight Watchers and I found it funny that Cannie had already tried that particular diet. I am glad Cannie was able to find peace within herself. I plan on reading other Weiner books as soon I get the chance.

What a small world...I was reading the journal entries from this book's previous readers, and lo and behold, this book spent some time with my cousin Morgail in Kentucky. (*waves hi!*)

I've been looking forward to reading this book since I've read (and loved) "In Her Shoes" and "Little Earthquakes."

Missprisy, I sent you a PM about the missing-in-action copy of "Body of Evidence", but please let me know if you didn't receive my message. I'm heading out to a few used bookstores this weekend to hunt down another copy of that book.

I love Jennifer Weiner's heroines. Strong women who find confidence in themselves regardless of what society dictates to be "beautiful." I really enjoyed Cannie's character -- she was completely believable, and I could identify with her on many levels. While some situations were a bit over-the-top (such as meeting and befriending a rich & famous movie star) -- somehow Weiner makes these implausible scenarios seem somehow possible. Thank you, missprisy, for sharing this book with me. I'm going to pass it on to another bookcrosser to keep it moving, as well!
