George Woodcock proposes that this story was written at a point of crisis in Charles Dickens's life. The three main characters become projections of Dickens himself. The title suggests the basic dichotomy on which the novel rests: the choice between changing society and changing oneself. (amazon.co.uk synopsis)

I never read this book. Well, I've started it, but I wasn't in the mood for Dickens style. If you're interested PM me.
