I picked this up from the free book shelves at the Arlington County Central Library. This paperback was withdrawn from circulation, apparently because of its poor condition. I've taped it up to extend its life and will read and release it.

I finished reading this book this afternoon, and all I really can say is WOW! Why this wasn't required reading when I'm in school is a mystery. Beautifully written, this book powerfully portrays life in the rural deep south during the depression years of the 1930's. It shows both the poverty and the racism of that time and place. However, this book has a great deal of compassion and shows that fair minded people can exist in such environments. This was a wonderful book, one that I might not have read except for BookCrossing!

This copy is in fairly poor condition (in fact pages 43 and 44 are missing), but I've patched it up as well as I can, and I hope it holds together for at least a few more readers.
