Sookie Stackhouse has what she calls "disability" -she can hear what other people think. So naturally dating isn´t that easy.
Fortunately the vampires´Mecca, New Orleans, is not a far away, and eventually Sookie meets a vampire -and can´t read his thoughts. But dating isn´t that easy this time, either. Bill might be nice, but vampire´s a vampire; can Sookie be sure he hasn´t anything to do with the mysterious murders?

Dead Until Dark is a mix of romance and mystery. I even might call it vampire-Harry Potter-for older-readers; after all, it´s reality with a twist.

It says in the back cover "hard to put down", which for once is true. I read this in a day and can hardly wait to get the next one in the series.

Just received the book in the mail this morning. Thanks, vi0let! I like the cover - it's stylish in a children's book kind of way.

Journal Entry 5 by myntti from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, December 10, 2003
This was a light & fun read. Several people have recommended these books in Book Talk and other forums, so I guess my expectations were a bit too high, because I expected something really great. Don't get me wrong - I liked the book well enough to want to read the next book, but this was 'just okay'.

Thanks to 'Dead Until Dark' we now have an explanation for the 'Bubba sightings'. Heh.

I mailed the book to Fushmush today.

Journal Entry 6 by fushmush from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Monday, December 15, 2003
This one arrived today! I think I've overstretched myself on bookrays and bookrings. This is the third one I've received in a week! Luckily I'm halfway through my current ray and will get started on Dead until Dark as soon as possible.

Thanks vi0let for hosting the ring :D.

Journal Entry 7 by fushmush from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, December 21, 2003
Wow, what a fun book! I really enjoyed this novel :D. A few people recommended this novel and I'm really glad I got a chance to read it. I read the whole thing in few hours while "watching" my boyfriend's kite surfing lessons.

Loved Sookie and her "disability" and I laughed out loud when "bubba" came on the scene. Can't wait to read the next one. Will have to find a bookray to hop on.

Off to Kiptos tomorrow morning.

Journal Entry 8 by Kiptos from Singapore, n/a Singapore on Monday, December 29, 2003
Just received this today.

Will start on it once I chomp through a series of 28 manga. Up to no. 9 already. Give me a few more days.

Ah.. the bliss of having so much to read. Feels like Christmas every day. :)

Happy New Year everyone!

Love the cool cover but very misleading, my brain cannot reconcile the fact that the story inside is not really a teen fiction.

Not bad but a little slow until the last quarter. But the vamps here are not as sexy as Laurell K Hamilton's, not as much action either except for that bit in Eric's pub and the ending. Surprised that Bill did not turn up to save Sookie, but ok, he did contribute in making her stronger so that she ended up saving her own life.

Would love to see Eric as a competitor. Hope the sequels are much better. Sending this along to Quest-Kraven next week.

And thanks, fushmush, for the postcard. Very unique since we don't have it here.

Mailed out this book to Quest-Kraven this morning. ETA mid-March.

Journal Entry 11 by Quest-Kraven from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, February 17, 2004
Just received today. I will be setting this aside to read on the weekend. Thanks for letting me join this ring :)

update 02/24/04: I'm still reading the first quarter. It took me a while to get into and I haven't had much reading time lately. I will most definitely finish it by Sat/Sun at the latest.

Journal Entry 12 by Quest-Kraven from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Sunday, February 29, 2004
Dead Until Dark is probably one of the more unusual vampire novels I’ve read to date. I would best describe it as a hybrid of light fantasy, cozy mystery and Chick Lit romance. Despite my earlier misgivings about the Southern Vampire series, (I had previously tried to read the 2nd book Living Dead in Dallas) I really wanted to read Dead Until Dark because I felt reading chronologically might change my overall impression. As it turns out, it did. After an initial slow start, I started to get into the groove of the setting and enjoy the story.

Sookie Stackhouse is a very winsome character. I have to admit I was charmed by her humor, short temper and naïveté. I thought Bill was a bit too stereotypical of a brooding vampire although I did enjoy his more intimate moments with Sookie. The other supporting characters are probably the weakest part about this novel. Arlene, Jason, Andy, Sam, Eric, Rene etc were all too one dimensional and completely uninteresting.

Despite all the exuberant glowing reviews at Amazon and elsewhere, I think Dead Until Dark doesn’t necessarily appeal to every vampire genre fan. Readers who like their traditional vampire fiction to be dark, intense, fast-paced, descriptive and passionate will probably be disappointed. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for a more non-traditional, homey-style vamp novel then this book...fits the Bill. ;)

came in today's mail! I'm headed to mom's for a few day's, so this will be good to have on hand to read.

Journal Entry 17 by Shendoah from San Jose, California USA on Thursday, July 8, 2004
This was Really Cute. I had a lot of fun reading it. It was sexy, scary, funny and on occasion charming. Good enough that I was annoyed when interruped while I was reading, and on occasion stayed up late to finish a section.

Bill the Vampire is awesome. Not Jean-Claude of Anita Blake fame, but perhaps more human than some of his fully alive neighbors. He's at times quite funny, curious, and wanting to be able to live as he does, be what he is, and not apologize for it.

Sookie doesn't have any delusions of living up to something she's not, and though she can use a bit in the self-esteem category, couldn't we all.

So, a good fun read for the back yard, bath tub or beach. And the who dun it is well enough written that I don't think many people will figure it out before Sookie does.

off to hbrogan tomorrow.

Journal Entry 18 by hbrogan on Monday, August 2, 2004
This book was surprisingly good! I'm not much of a mystery fan, but I do love vampires, so I was interested from the start. I really liked the concept of vampires trying to "fit in" with "normal" society rather than skulking around wearing period costumes and living in creepy old castles. Sookie, the heroine, is funny, though at times I did want to strangle her. The author does a good job of keeping the reader engaged throughout--there are very few "slow" sections. I liked the book enough that I'd like to read the sequel.

Thanks for sharing! I'll pass this on when I get an address for the next in line!

Got this in the mail yesterday and have started it. Looks like a quick read. I'll post again when I've finished it.

Update 09/06/04
Finished this one and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series. Will mail tomorrow to Candy80.

Journal Entry 20 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Thursday, September 16, 2004
Got the book in the mail yesterday. I'm the last stop in this ring. Vi0let said she doesn't need the book back because she bought another copy. Hmm, maybe I'll make a new ring when I'm done...

Here's a list of the books in the Southern Vampire series:
1. Dead Until Dark (May 2001)
2. Living Dead in Dallas (March 2002)
3. Club Dead (May 2003)
4. Dead to the World (May 2004)
5. Dead as a Doornail (May 2005)
6. Definitely Dead (May 2006)
7. All Together Dead (May 2007)

Journal Entry 21 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Sunday, September 10, 2006
It took me a long time to get to this book (too many bookrings coming in all the time), but when I finally did, I couldn't put it down, and finished it in two days.

I loved this book a lot - I think the Southern setting was very well done, although somebody who actually lives there would have to confirm this... But for an outsider, it felt very real. I also loved Sookie as a main character, and I could completely understand why she felt insecure about her "disability" and otherwise. Fortunately she wasn't one of those whiny characters with no backbone, on the contrary.

I've read a lot of vampire books recently, and this was a welcome change. I found Bill's and Sookie's relationship to be really heartwarming, because it felt real. Also, I found the gradual deepening of the relationship much more erotic than reading about a couple who instantly lusts after each other and then proceeds to have sex... I guess for me subtlety is the key; many authors overdo it by writing pages about how sexy someone is.

The murder mystery was really well done too, and I had no idea how it would turn out. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series (there are 6 already)! I'll pass this book on as a bookray if there is interest.

Journal Entry 22 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Monday, September 18, 2006
Only two people were interested, so this will be a mini-ray. I have now mailed the book to Kemppu, who will pass the book on to Margih.

Journal Entry 23 by Kemppu from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Thursday, September 21, 2006
Whee, this vampire book was waiting for me when I returned home from my travels. The book looks interesting and I will read it soon.

Journal Entry 24 by Kemppu from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Sunday, October 8, 2006
Oh, what an enjoyable book to read! Well, if a book features vampires, crime mystery and tricky relationships, it's quite likely to be a book that I enjoy. I really like this modern kind of fantasy, where ordinary life in today's world mixes with the supernatural. (I'm not usually into Middle-Ages-sword-fighting -type of fantasy.) Contary to some former opinions, I didn't like the cover picture at all. But I don't mind the cover since the inside was good...

I liked Sookie and Bill as characters, but I agree the former reader Quest-Kraven that some of the other characters were somewhat one-sided. The way the relationship of Sookie and Bill was described and how it developed was good. As CandyDarling said, it didn't just go off like a wildfire right away and was therefore more real. It's not easy to date a vampire, for sure! I also liked the fact that the author didn't try explain Sookie's (dis)ability and that the book showed that being able to read minds isn't as easy and fun as one might think.
Bubba made me LOL, as did the references to Anne Rice. =)
All in all, this was a very good story and a quick read and made me want to read the whole series!

The book goes to Margih next.
***Sent forward 9th October, 2006***

Journal Entry 25 by Margih from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, October 11, 2006
Received this one already yesterday but forgot to journal it.. Good season for vampires, but this book must wait as there are some other vampirebooks to read first... and non-vampire-books, too. Thanks CandyDarling for informing me about this one! And thanks Kemppu for sending the book with the lovely self-made card. Not bad at all!
