Unfortunately I forgot to journal this book when I finished it several months ago and my memory isn't as good as it should be. I do remember though that I loved this book and want to read more by the same author. A very enjoyable read.

Promised to FireDragon at London Meetup.

JemimaJ saved this for me because I'd recommended to her the very excellent The Poisonwood Bible, also by this author. I don't think she's read The Poisonwood Bible yet but said that she was re-inspired to do so after reading this one.

JemimaJ has been carrying this around for me for months and she remembered it tonight, my first meetup since about May or June! Thank you for sharing. I am looking forward to reading it and will let you know what I think.

This was a great read - thank you JemimaJ! The tale is compelling and the voice fresh and sincere. It deals with both the personal and the political; on one level it's about a woman's life, but it touches on far weightier issues with sensitivity and humour. The first person narrative is so charming and believable that it feels like a treat.

I don't think I enjoyed this as much as The Poisonwood Bible but maybe that's because of length. The Poisonwood Bible (which is enormous) is good to begin with but it gets better and better as you get to know the characters. With this book, it ended after just 232 pages. It was probably the right place for the story to end but I was so captivated by the characters that I could have easily read more. If a sequel exists, I would love to read it.

I might offer this up as a bookray for all those Barbara Kingsolver fans out there.

I may insert more names in here but I think this is a good size list for now. Please journal when you receive the book, after you've read it and when you send it on, so we can all keep track of the book's progress. There is not a strict time limit but please try to be considerate since others are waiting. Either surface mail or airmail is fine for international postage.

I set up this bookring a little while ago but I've been away to Australia and generally a bit slack about getting the ball rolling. I'm going to the post office now to rectify the situation!

Arrived safely today. Thanks, Fire-Dragon :-)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and became quite engrossed in the lives of Taylor, Lou Ann, Turtle, Mattie, Estevan and Esperanza. The final couple of chapters, with the search for Turtle's family and Taylor's resolution made me both cry and smile. I loved seeing Taylor grow - learning new things, falling in love, becoming a mother and I'm looking out now for the sequel - Pigs in Heaven - to follow her story further.

Thank you so much for sharing, Fire-Dragon. The book is wrapped and ready to post to Cross-patch tomorrow.

Thank you Fire-Dragon and WelshHelen. The Bean Trees arrived this morning and has come in out of the cold. We've got dreadful icy roads and white fields today, but lots of sunshine - not quite as I imagine rural Kentucky!

I too loved it, so I am also looking to read the sequel. I just loved the gutsyness of it, and am convinced I could change my very own t(i/y)res now!! I'll be sending Bean Trees to Zepplih tomorrow.

The book arrived safely today. Thanks. Looking forward to reading it as I have not read any of her work before.

What a gorgeous book. I absolutely loved it. It is not a story I would normally enjoy but it was so well written that I could not put it down. Thank you for starting this ring.

It will be sent to Scotsbookie today.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I think The Poisonwood Bible is still my favourite Kingsolver. I noticed that the political part of this book was much less 'in your face' than in later books & that for me made for an easier read. Must look for the sequel as I'd love to know what happens to Turtle, Taylor & everyone.

Will get this off to PurpleRosebud asap.

Popped in the post to PurpleRosebud this morning. Happy Reading!

Arrived today, many thanks Scotsbookie and for the lovely surprises that fell out when I opened the package! This will be my first Kingsolver book and having read the previous JEs I'm looking forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 17 by purplerosebud from Petersfield, Hampshire United Kingdom on Sunday, April 15, 2007
Great story! This was my first Barbara Kingsolver novel and I really enjoyed it. Such lovely characters that I just wanted to keep reading to find out how their lives worked out. Excellent desciptions so that you could just feel the heat, dust and rain. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books. Luckily I have Pigs in Heaven so I will soon be finding out what happens to them next. If any you other readers still want to read it just send me a PM and I'll send it out on a ring/ray.

Will be off to Wyjane as soon as I have her address.

arrived safely, I'm looking forward to reading this again after so long.

Journal Entry 19 by wyjane from Radford Semele, Warwickshire United Kingdom on Friday, June 15, 2007
I love this book, I'm not sure why as it deals with some pretty disturbing issues, it must be Barbara Kingsolvers style, I just feel I know the characters, which doesn't always happen! I've never found a book that I'd rate10 so a 9 from me is as good as it gets. This isn't the first time I've read it, and now I think I'll go out and get myself a copy so I can re-read it when I want.
Now its on its way to scarletrubies( thanks for coming back with the address so promptly)

Hi! Thanks so much for the book - which wasn't as slow coming as the JE might indicate... it arrived the day before I was headed out of town and I didn't have a chance to journal it then - or read it while I was away!

I've got a couple of books on the go at the moment, but am really looking forward to this one. Shall PM Deense shortly so the book will be ready to keep moving.

I'll be back to let you know what I thought!

Cheers,
Ruby

Oh my goodness; I can't believe how long it has been that I have had your book - am sorry.

I am so grateful for the loan. The Bean Trees has easily joined my personal "Top 10 Books of All Time", and I had a couple of local friends read it while I had it here. I found the book really impressive; short but not light; human but not sappy.

Most Book Crossers will be more impressed by a friend's experience of it, though. A girlfriend of mine was the victim of a violent crime about 10 years ago and has had a lot of emotional difficulties since. She has had sleeping issues, attention problems and a host of others things, and has not read a book since the night she was attacked. She happened to visit about 10 minutes after I finished the last page, and I couldn't help but rave about it and encouraged her to take it. She did, and was really affected by it (and is really glad it's the first book she's read in ten years or so).

Thanks for your patience; I'll get the book moving to Deense ASAP.

Journal Entry 22 by ScarletRubies from Palmerston, Northern Territory Australia on Wednesday, February 20, 2008
Not having any success getting onto Deense. Will try again; not really keen to post book overseas! :) Obviously I will if I can't get it to Deense.

This arrived in my boss' hand luggage when he came to visit NYC from Sydney. I will read this next week. Thanks ScarletRubies!

UPDATE 25 June - PRCS has asked to be skipped, so I will wild-release this later this year.

Journal Entry 24 by valerief from Queens, New York USA on Thursday, July 17, 2008
For whatever reason, I received and read Pigs in Heaven first. I did think this was a sweet story, and I found it interesting to treat this like a prequel. In taking on the challenge of raising a daughter and moving far away from home, Taylor finds inner strength and extends her family.

I may be receiving a bookbox soon, so perhaps this will travel on in that. Otherwise, I'll try to find an appropriate location to wild-release.
