After his parents, the great Flying Berninis, die during an act without a net, George goes to live with his Uncle Fritz. Fritz introduces his little nephew to the finer things--sporting houses in Pigalle, jazz concerts in Montmartre, sex by the railroad tracks and a series of odd jobs calculated for their chaos they continually seem to engender. George loves this life, but he is lost in a custody battle to a more respectable aunt and uncle in Chicago. When he can't endure living with them any longer, he sets out on his own halfway around the world to find the person he truly loves.
