Discovered this book in a charity shop in Brentwood, Essex. Not sure if I'm going to read it... maybe I'll just set it free to find some new readers. Doesn't look as if it's been read since it first started its Bookcrossing journey in 2012.

“This is the story of a man who went far away for a long time, just to play a game.”
The above quote is the opening line and succinctly sums up this novel. The book follows Jernau Morat Gurgeh, the master of every board, computer and strategy games known to him. Gurgeh has built a reputation for himself but has become bored with success, disillusioned with the lack of competition, the lack of consequences should he lose and wants something more challenging.
'The Player of Games' is told from a third-person perspective and is the second book in the 'Culture' series but isn't a direct sequel so can be read as a one off (as I did). The action is fast paced and I found myself turning each page in anticipation, despite its obvious flaws found the Azad Empire fascinating and would have liked to learnt even more about it. Overall I found this a well written and engaging story, that despite its rather abrupt ending, kept me engrossed. I will definitely be looking out for the remaining books in the series.

Thank you for swapping an Iain Banks for an Iain Banks
8 April 23 - I picked this up a day or two before coming down with a cold, which made concentrating a little harder and I probably could have done with reading this a full strength. I persevered though seeing as I’d already started and at times found it hard to picture what this world would look like. It was an interesting concept though and one I’ve not come across before, however I wasn’t particularly enamoured with the main character and found him difficult to relate to. It was a bit slow at times, and there were a couple of scenes I just found difficult to read about. It did pick up towards the end.
