an intriguing book set in South Africa in the 1950s. The book interweaves the lives of several individuals and their families in the context of the early years of apartheid. The book covers fictionalised personal experiences as political events sweep through the country, including the passive resistance campaign, the clearance of Sophiatown, the introduction and implementation of pass laws and the founding of the Liberal Party. I really enjoyed this one, have passed on to my partner to read next.
passed to aileenconnor, who wanted to read this one as well.
Taken from the bookbox of pam99, with thanks.have almost finished reading Hilary mantels 'a change of climate' which charts the lives of missionaries in south Africa's apartheid society, so this book is perfect additional reading.
I don't know why, but I struggled with this a bit. Not sure whether it was the jumping about between the characters and I couldn't keep a track of the different voices, I just kept losing the train of the story; it was unfolding with me having to flick back several pages. Perhaps I just don't have the head for reading it this week. Might come back to it or find another reader soon.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Released to the winner of Unusual countries/unusual authors..happy winnings. Whilst South Africa could hardly be described as unusual, this book was the first I had read from a South African writer, so for me counts! Hope you enjoy it..

And you so much for the book and parcel of stamps, how exciting. Books by South African authors are not overly abundant and I think it is a great choice to send for this sweepstake.
