Journal Entry 1 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Friday, March 23, 2012
I loved this fantasy novel set in Edinburgh.

Cameron's world changes when his dad dies and he's sent to live with his Gran. She introduces him to the Daemon Parallel and he discovers he can shift between worlds. He also discovers there's more to his city than he realised, as well as more to his Gran.

If you know Edinburgh you'll recognise a lot of the settings, and possibly some of the folklore. I particularly liked finding out why it's so easy to get lost in a large department store on Princes Street, and the Demon Parallel version of Heave Awa Hoose (the story of this name is in the book if you don't know it). If you don't know Edinburgh you'll get the impression that the city is magical (and you won't be far wrong!).

The Daemon Parallel was launched in Edinburgh this week and I got author Roy Gill to sign this copy. It's addressed to "all the bookcrossers" so I'm going to send it out on a bookray to reach as many readers as possible. It's a paperback, 310pp, 13x20x2.5cm, about 320g. PM with your shipping preferences if you'd like to join.

It wasn't a bad read, but I didn't particularly enjoy it, and I only skipped through the last chapters, just to see how it all ends, without actually reading it o.o By the way, I wouldn't list this book as YA - more Children, in my opinion. ^^

Journal Entry 5 by sintra at Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Friday, April 27, 2012
The book arrived safely in Bonn - thanks a lot! :-)
I'll read it after my current book.

A really entertaining and imaginative book! I liked the fact that it was set in Edinburgh although I thought the location could have provided even more atmosphere at some points. What a pity I didn't know the story of Heave Awa Hoose before my last visit to Edinburgh - I walked past it many times without paying attention to the inscription. But I got lost in the department store, too. ;-)

Thanks a lot for sharing this book with us, Nell-Lu! It will be on its way again soon.

I was a bit concerned when I received the book and saw its incredibly cheesy cover but you know what they say: don't judge a book by its cover. Well, unfortunately here I found my concerns confirmed.

I'm with xlacrimax on this one. It's an ok read but I also found myself skipping more and more pages towards the end. The writing style seems a bit childish and after a while the story didn't manage to keep me interested that much.

Will pass it on as soon as I have the next address. Thanks for sharing!

I will get to it when I'll finish the current book I'm reading.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it has elements that I like in a fantasy book: parallel worlds, mythical creatures, a contemporary setting. But, on the other hand, I didn’t feel a strong connection; I felt we were kind of thrown into a world, without explanations and try to figure it out on our own. And there are still many unanswered questions lingering, as the main character still has a lot to learn about his past & heritage. The writing is okay, it reads well enough. Overall, I found it quite average. I’ve seen better in the same genre.

I've pm the next bcer for this book and will mail it when I'll have the infos!

This book arrived while I was away on vacation - it has been sitting safely in it's package on my kitchen counter all this time thanks to my house/pet sitter - I should have it read and on it's way within a month.
Sorry for the delay in journalling, but life is life and the book has been safe :)

I feel like such a loser! I read this book back in August, packaged it up and had it ready to go with a bunch of other bookcrossing packages and somehow it got lost in the papers and craft stuff on the desk that my daughters and I use for arts and crafts - I took a bunch of others to the post office in September, but this one and and a RABCK for AKSarah got lost in the mess. Since this is the first day of Spring break for my kids we figured it would be a good morning to clean up the craft area - I was so shocked and dismayed when I found this book still sitting here - and I can't believe nobody PM'd me about it's whereabouts.

Anyways - I did read the book and it was not bad, but I found the writing a bit forced. I liked the idea very much.

It is now on it's way to azuki - I ran to the post office and sent it Airmail as soon as I found it.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooo sorry for holding up this ring.....

Well, glad the book is unburied!
I have two rings ahead of this but should be able to read this in a timely manner.
The mention of parallel world reminds me of Underworld and Unlondon, among others. I look forward to seeing how this one is like.

ETA: 5/20 sorry life is kind of crazy lately. I am almost half way through the book. Will contact the next person and am hopeful that I will be able to mail it out next week.

Journal Entry 16 by wingAzukiwing at Miami, Florida USA on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
I'd say I enjoyed this one, there are some interesting elements in it, though there are other fantasies about parallel worlds that are done better. I find it quite exciting and have to read on to see what happens: to Cameron, the werewolf and Eve.

BTW, I was reading it in my lunch room at work, when a coworker spotted this book, and said, oh, Roy Gill, he's a good author! (just want to say this so Nell-Lu can pass this on) I was pleasantly surprised as I sure haven't heard of this author before.

This now goes to Judyslump.

Arrived here safely today. Thanks for starting this, Nell-Lu!

Journal Entry 18 by JudySlump612 at Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Thursday, June 20, 2013
I'm afraid I'm lining up with the previous readers who found this set at a level for younger readers. The action kept coming to a stop while someone (or something) explained to Cameron what was going on. Maybe the author was just a bit too ambitious about creating the fantasy world.

On the plus side, I very much enjoyed the setting in Edinburgh. It's a place I'm not very likely to visit in the flesh, so it was fun for me to imagine myself walking among those historical streets and buildings.

Safely arrived in New Zealand, possibly while I was sunning myself on a tropical island in the Pacific ocean (just mentioning it to make Nell-Lu jealous!)

Thanks for sending it on

Journal Entry 21 by kiwiinengland at Wellington City, Wellington Province New Zealand on Sunday, August 25, 2013
An interesting read, where you are unsure just who to trust. I loved the atmosphere created in the store, and the battle between the two old women for control of their charges. At times I think the emotional changes in the main character were a little abrupt and put in more to keep the plot flowing than to draw a realistic teen.

I would certainly read the next book in the series, as I reckon the story telling will get better and the characters and locations are really strong. Pretty bad cover design though.

I was culling books so that they would fit on my shelves again and almost passed this one on without reading it. Read the comments here and thought I would give it a go.

This book wasn't terrible but I struggled to really get into it. Reading about the supernatural is not really my genre, so that probably didn't help.

I plan to take this with me to the Athens Bookcrossing Convention to pass on there.

I hope this book makes someone's day. If it's not your kind of read, journal it, pass it on and join in the fun of watching books you have touched travel the world!
