Synopsis (Credit: Back cover)
Five daring tales of passion, decadence and betrayal
– The Kiss
– Désirée's Baby
– The Story of an Hour
– The Unexpected
– The Godmother
The sensuality that suffuses the work of Kate Chopin (1851-1904) startles us with its modernity. Whether evoking the complex world of Creole New Orleans, where racial boundaries are burst by erotic gestures, often with tragic results, or recounting the simple sacrifices made in the name of love, she makes human emotions come instantly, dramatically alive.
(Bought second-hand at Help the Rural Child Charity Bookshop, Victoria Road, Mowbray.)

Clearly a master at the short story genre, Kate Chopin came as a big surprise to me. Her style is just so different from what I expected from someone writing in the late nineteenth century. These 5 tales are all fresh and sparse, to the point, atmospheric, and often with a sting in the tail.
They were the first of her works I have ever read. I'll be looking out for her novel, The Awakening.
