I found this fair-condition softcover at the local library book sale, and was attracted by the creepy cover art.
Later: Very creepy indeed, with the "deadly rituals in small rural communities" elements of "The Lottery" or "Children of the Corn", with its own twists, and a strong Halloween flavor. The premise is that every Halloween the teenage boys of the town set out to catch and kill The October Boy, the pumpkin-headed scarecrow-demon-thing from the cover; the game's a dangerous one, as the October Boy will kill anyone he/it catches, but if someone does manage to get him, there's a significant reward.
As to the nature of this jolly local custom - well, we learn more about it as the story progresses, and while some elements weren't that much of a surprise to me, I enjoyed the way the story unfolded. And the action/horror sequences of the hunt itself were very well done; this would make a really dandy film!
