I received this great book today in the mail as part of the Wishlist Tag Game, thanks so much for 'tagging' me! I am looking forward to reading it :)
An interesting look at what one person did to get a job on a cruise line and the things that happen during cruises that the passengers know nothing about.

Just received today, and I've already read the first few pages. Thanks for sending this to me, Bookstogive.
This may have set a new record for fastest time from in-the-door to actually reading it. Quite an enjoyable behind-the-scenes look at the cruise industry, getting a job, living on the ship, entertaining the passengers, and then the burnout. I was rather surprised at the quick rate of burnout. The only part of the tale I didn't care for was the part about the excessive drinking (even though it's probably true, esp. on Carnival - given their demographic).
We actually took our only cruise about 15 years ago on Carnival, not that we were part of their young demographic, but because they were one of the cheaper cruises. We went on the 5-day cruise, which included Key West and Cozumel. Enjoyed seeing the ruins at Tulum (near Cozumel) and a quick tour of Key West, we were more into the historical sites, rather than the sun and fun, or excessive partying. Enjoyed it then, but I'm not sure I'd go on Carnival these days with all the illnesses and accidents.
Thanks so much for sharing this excellent book and quick read. I'll probably save this for a planned RABCK, after I read another book or so for it.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Mailing this off in the next day or two as a surprise RABCK. Enjoy!
Woohoo! A wishlist RABCK! Thanks so much!
A really interesting read partly because the only cruise we've ever been on was on this ship. We were supposed to do a five day cruise and ended up being out for 9 days because of a hurricane. We could have flown back to Dallas and found our way back to Houston then Galveston but the port was closed, Galveston Island was closed and our only car was in a parking lot that was supposedly flooded.
We'd been hit by an idiot on his cell phone who totaled his and our trucks the day before the cruise.
We learned:
When food supplies on a ship get low order room service.
The ships can only take on supplies in the US.
You can return to Cozumel too many times.
The ship can not stay in port if it isn't scheduled.
You can get tired of being on vacation and having to act as hosts for a company cruise.
Your kids will not be happy if they can't reach you because everyone else is using your cell phone because they "forgot" to add international calling to their plans and they swear they "will pay you back." They won't.
I see this on a few others wishlists. Hoping to tag one of them soon.
Hey MyssZ come to TX and we'll do a cruise to nowhere!

Wow! What a wonderful surprise! Thank you so much, MyssCyn. I didn't realize so many other people had this on their wishlist before me :-). From the previous entries, it sounds like a quick and interesting read. I look forward to it!

Enjoyable read. Berman is a great storyteller. I was very impressed with the work he went to in order to land the cruise ship job. He sure was on a mission!
It was interesting to learn about the behind-the-scenes unglamorous life of the ship's crew: i knew that their sleeping accommodations were far from luxurious, but was surprised to learn that they don't get to eat the same food as the passengers. I'd just never thought about it, really, but figured with all that food around...
The one [5-day Mediterranean] cruise I took was on a smaller and much more sedate ship, as opposed to the Carnival's "party ship" the author worked on. I don't think the Carnival lifestyle would appeal to me, even when I was much younger :-)
Having worked as a travel agent, I could identify with the initial joy at all the perks, but also with the eventual burnout.
Thank you for sharing, MyssCyn and all the other BCers in this journal!

Picked up today at the Hawaii Book and Music Festival - thanks!
My aunt & uncle love cruises, but I've never been on one, so I thought I'd give this book a try.

I read about half of this but decided to stop: I think it was more than I wanted to know about the life of the staff/crew on a cruise ship, possibly because I haven't been on one and don't expect to any time soon. I did like the cruise trivia.
I found author Micha Berman's job search process a bit intimidating - maybe it says more about me than him, but I can't imagine being that focused on any one thing.
This book has been claimed from the Nonfiction VBB and is headed off to Oklahoma!
I'll count this as a release for Secretariat's 2016 Never Judge a Book By Its Cover Challenge (week 36: biographies & memoirs).
