In a rambling house, failed poet Toby Dobbs has created a refuge for people who need one. But when a quiet tragedy and an unwelcome letter interrupt Toby’s sedate existence, he needs his housemates to find some direction in their lives. Leah Pilgrim has watched the tenants of the house over the road for several years, and when the owner of 31 Silversmith Road asks her for advice, he opens the door not only to the eccentric building across the street – but to five lives in various stages of turmoil.
Can Toby and Leah help these misfits to grow up, move on and move out? And in doing so, can they make their own dreams come true?

Leah and Toby have lived across the street from one another for years without meeting ...and Leah has been itching to peek behind the front door of Toby’s eccentric house, always packed to the rafters with weird and wonderful tenants. When fate finally lets her in, Leah finds that Toby needs her as much as she is surprised to realize she might need him. Sometimes life needs a helping hand and with a sprinkle of romance and their own special magic, Toby and Leah’s dreams show the glimmer of a chance of coming true. “31 Dream Street” is a wonderfully warm and insightful novel that will capture the imagination and soothe the soul.
I picked up this book last night in 4Food at the NYC Bookcrossing meetup. Thanks for bringing it, Sobergirl!

It’s impossible to believe in a landlord so kindly he’d try to make his guests happy before evicting them. But Ms. Jewell has created just such a landlord, the sweet if socially inept Toby. The trouble is he needs to get to know them to figure out what will make them happy and fulfilled and Toby isn’t exactly the gregarious type. So his friend Leah decides to help him.
Amusing, sweet, light-hearted even while touching some of the more sordid aspects of human nature (Toby has a crush on a flighty girl who’s little more than a mistress for older, desperate rich men), this remains a slightly different kind of romance novel. There are no feisty ladies with delicious figures and a taste for sin (well, there are, but they’re not the ones we’re supposed to root for) and no bad boys with hard biceps, perfect abs and a taste for danger. There are just people, ordinary folks trying to sort out their lives. Not all of them have happy endings but Toby finally gets them out of his house. What happens next isn’t entirely what you would expect.
Give this a try if you like your romance fluffy with just a smidge of melancholy.
