I really do try to appreciate NZ's writers, but they make it so difficult. I can see what Knox was trying to do here, with the whole magic realism thing, but she fails. It just comes out as incomprehensible, and I didn't even develop enough sympathy for the characters to want to find out what happened to them (or even to really be bothered untangling the mess of relationships and multiple names). I did persist to the end, just in case it got better, but unfortunately it didn't.

Oh well, maybe one day I'll find a NZ author (other than the YA ones) worth reading...
