I have NYC on the brain, and found this book in the second hand shop. Fate! Destiny! And looks like a good book generally.

From the back: "A coterie of artists, prostitutes, saints and seers are all aspiring towards fame and hoping for love and acceptance. Instead they find high rents, faithless partners and dead-end careers. Offbeat, funny and bitingly satirical, "Slaves of New York" sheds an incomparable light on the cities denizens and social mores."

You know, this took a while to get through, and most of the characters were not super lovely, but they were not without their charms. To be honest, the quirks, while pronounced perhaps, were also real. and you got into it. And you cared what was happening, even if you kinda hoped nothing much good happened.

This is not a very articulate review. But you get the idea. The book is worth the read. Characters are vivid. Context is engaging.
