Synopsis:
"One July, 1918, the imprisoned family of Tsar Nicholas Romanov was awakened and led down to the basement of the Ipatiev house. There they were summarily executed. Their bodies were hidden away, the location a secret of the Soviet state.

A decade later, one man lives in purgatory, banished to a forest on the ouskirts of humanity. Pekkala, was once the most trusted secret agent of the Romanovs, the right hand man of the Tsar himself. Now he is Prisoner 4745P, living a harsh existence in which even the strongest vanish into the merciless Soviet winter.

But the state needs Pekkala one last time. The man who knew the Romanovs best is given a final mission: catch their killers, locate the royal child rumored to be alive, and give Stalin the international coup he craves. Find the bodies, Pekkala is told, and you will find your freedom. Find the survivor of that bloody night and you will change history. In a land of uneasy alliances and deadly treachery, Pekkala is thrust into the past where he once reigned. There he will meet the man who betrayed him and the woman he loved and uncover a secret so shocking that it will shake to its core the land he loves."

I won the Dutch edition of this book in a tag-give-away on Facebook. Look forward to read it very much!

While reading, some of the expectations I had were not fulfilled: the text on the back cover suggests that it is a very exciting book, but for me it was not.
During the story I was curious about what would happen, but did not sit on the edge of my seat, ready to warn the main character that something is about to happen what I know, but he is not. (Sometimes I have that with a very exciting book ...).

That doesn't make this a bad book, on the contrary!
To me the book was intriguing: the story, the narrative style, the other view on the historical topic. It was a page turner, because the story was headed in a direction I had no idea of. And I just wanted to know.
The flashbacks to the history of the two brothers, of the Emerald Eye and the last Tsar of Russia, were very functional for understanding the story itself. I've read in one go.

And yes, it's a novel, history is presented in a fictional manner. Because there are (were) so many speculations about the death of Nicholas and Alexandra and their children it was particularly fun to read.

And the end? Very surprising. I'm curious about the next book in this series.

Arrived safely here today. Thank you boekentrol for finding another copy to keep this book ring going!

It's not a book I would have picked myself soon, but it does look intrigueng.

Finished reading it and it wasn't really what I expected to be. The back made it sound like it was a very exciting, page turner type of book. It was a bit more slow paced, but still very good. I definitely made me want to know more about the romanovs.

This arrived yesterday. I love the recycled packaging!

A detective story set in Stalin's Russia, centred on the fate of the Romanovs. I have to admit that this didn't do much for me - it was OK, but I found the actual history in the back far more interesting than the story. The general air of Tsariolatry, while in character for the main character, felt rather dismissive of the valid concerns of the Russian people, and put me off. I also found the extensive flashback sections in italic type difficult to read - physically, I mean, not emotionally.

This has arrived! I'm off to Dublin shortly so I won't be reading it until I get back but I won't hold it up!

Journal Entry 10 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Falkirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 1, 2012
As others have said, this wasn't a book that kept you on the edge of your seat but it was enjoyable. I am very interested in that period of time and the intrigue surrounding the Romanovs deaths therefore the background for the story was a perfect setting. Maybe I knew too much about the circumstances to believe the story but I was glad to see the facts at the end of the book.

The book's with me now, thanks!

Journal Entry 16 by Annimanni at Espoo, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Friday, July 20, 2012
As the previous journalers, I didn't find this particularly gripping or thrilling, but enjoyed it nevertheless, mainly for the history behind the fictive story. Being from Finland, the events are part of my history, too, and all the more interesting for that. Thanks for sharing!

Yay, the next one is here! This one does not seem like my piece of cake at first glance, but I'll give it a try.

Just received this book in the mail today. I wonder which parts of Germany the book explored before it arrived here? Usually, it takes a day or maybe 2 days for packages to travel from one place to another within Germany! Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading this, it sounds like an interesting book.

Journal Entry 26 by Qantaqa at Dachau, Bayern Germany on Wednesday, December 12, 2012
I quite enjoyed reading the book, but didn't particularly like the ending. Apart from that an entertaining read.
I'm going to send the book to LilyKlip sometime this week.

Journal Entry 27 by LilyKlip at Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Wednesday, December 19, 2012
The book is with me now but will have to wait a bit. As Boekentrol does not want it back I will read it a bit later (MTBR is increasing right now...) and I will try and organise a ray after.

Thank you!
