-- This is the second copy of Of Mice and Men on my bookshelf --

Synopsis (Credit: Back cover)

Of Mice and Men revolves around two central characters: Lennie and George. Lennie is a man with the strength of two, but with the mind of a child — simple, unaffected, and kindly. His whole world centres round George, who steers him through life and protects him when his superhuman strength and child's mind unwittingly entangle him in trouble.

Of Cannery Row John Steinbeck said he just 'opened the pages and let the stories crawl in by themselves'. Cannery Row is a street bordered by houses, shacks, and boiler pipes, in which live all kinds of people, good and bad, kind and cruel, the industrious and the idle, who have one thing at least in common — their poverty.

Both books are on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List.

(Bought second-hand at Help the Rural Child Charity Bookshop, Victoria Road, Mowbray.)

• Of Mice and Men

I read this copy of the book. This was my review:

A classic story told with insight and compassion. The characters all come to life and the period is painted vividly.

A good 30 years after it made such an impression on my brother, I finally got to reading it as well, and understanding why. Thanks, Boet.

• Cannery Row

The book sets out as follows:

Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream. Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky-tonks, restaurants and whore-houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flop-houses. Its inhabitants are, as the man once said, 'whores, pimps, gamblers, and sons of bitches,' by which he meant Everybody. Had the man looked through another peep-hole he might have said: 'Saints and angels and martyrs and holy men,' and he would have meant the same thing.

And that's exactly what Steinbeck does, masterfully. The result is entertaining, poignant, hilarious, devious, uplifting and sad ... all at the same time. Circumstances and times may have changed, the essence of life hasn't.
