More than anything, this book reminds me of an early Stephanie Plum set in the Deep South. Sarah Booth Delaney (and yes, they mostly call her Sarah Booth ---and that is so Southern) has fallen on hard times and is in danger of losing the family home that's been in her family for generations. She more or less kidnaps her friend's little dog and then 'rescues' it for the ransom in order to get enough to stave off foreclosure. The friend is grateful (and Sarah Booth at least has the good taste to be guilty about it) and hires her to find out about her old flame who's just returned from Europe, the darkly handsome and mysterious Hamilton Garrett the Fifth. The mystery is good but even better is the slice of Southern life - the Daddy's Girls, and Cagey Old Rednecks, and Buddy Club, and Code of the South. As a GRIT (girl raised in the South), I can tell you that I've seen all of these characters. Oh, some of them went my other names, but the characters are tropes for a reason. There's the clueless friend (Tinkie - her dog Chablis is the dognapping victim), and the mean girl (Kincaid - and Sarah delivers a great line at her party: "...you look lovely tonight. But how do you get your eyeliner so straight when you don't cast a reflection in the mirror?) and Jitty, the resident ghost who reminds me of a paranormal Lulu with great one-liners and a wardrobe that is unique. Hamilton the Fifth generates plenty of interest and more than a little steam and I'm crossing my fingers that he'll be back for more in the next installment. Sarah Booth gets into quite a few scrapes reminiscent of Stephanie along the way to solving the mystery. I for one am looking forward to more in this series.

Quote to remember:

The deliberate effort of memory for small detail is a social grace that will take a person far.

My Review: Wow! This book was amazing. This is the first book I have read by this author. The main character is Sarah Booth Delaney, she is the last one left in her family. She is living in her family's home, but since she doesn't have much money left it's likely she will lose it. She finds a way to make some money working for one of the "Daddy's Girls" (high society women who come from a good family who marry in the same upper class as her parents) that she grew up with. She falls into a murder mystery and seems determined to solve a decades old murder. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
