"In her second novel, Iris Murdoch strikes a delicate balance between absurdity and tragedy, between realism and fantasy. In the opinion of many devotees, this is her most entrancing novel." from the back-cover. The actual copy has a different cover, because it is a Penguin PB of 1970, though in a reasonably good condition.

What to think of this book? A cast of characters seems to struggle to find their places in the world. Do they? Some perhaps gain a few answers, but no one really seems to completely find it. Most of them just seem to run away from their lives.
