Fantastic book - one can only hope that the movie measures up......

Product Description
Now in paperback, the book no one can stop talking about . . .
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV.

One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor tohis or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games.

But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Acclaimed writer Suzanne Collins, author of the New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles, delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this stunning novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present.

Tonight's get together at the Park Theatre Cafe was quite exciting as we opened up a Bookbox sent to us from some Calgary BookCrossers. What fun! When "The Hunger Games" emerged from the box, everyone was astonished to find that I've not yet read it...so...I guess I'd better remedy that situation ASAP. ;-)

I've certainly heard about the series (I'm a teacher - can't avoid hearing all about whatever catches my students' attention) and I've been meaning to pick up this book for quite some time. Well...I guess the time is now! Thanks Minerva!

Journal Entry 4 by K-i-s-m-e-t at Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Well, it's been a while since I stayed up all night to finish reading a book (grin) but this was just the thing to get me back into that groove... ;-)

I can see why this series has caught the attention of so many young readers. It's a "Young Adult" book that has a story involved enough for anyone to enjoy. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the books.

The story is set in a dystopian future in the remains of what used to be the United States. Every year, each district must send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen as "tribute". These 24 children are required to compete in the annual "Hunger Games", a televised fight to the death.

The theme brought two other stories to mind. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and Richard Bachman's (Steven King's) "The Running Man". The second, in particular was similar in its disturbing look at where "reality TV" could eventually lead us.

I'm passing this book along to my mom, who has also said she'd like to read it.

Well, all right. Fine.

Of course I have heard all the hype about this book, and I've successfully avoided it until there was a brand new looking copy in K-i-s-m-e-t's hands at the last meeting.

*sigh* another series... ;)

A friend of mine found this book all packaged up during our break from swing dance practice at the University of Manitoba in the Frank Kennedy Centre (surprised to hear it was released at the Forks). Since I haven't read it yet, she passed it to me.

Unfortunately, I just started reading George R. R. Martin's A Feast For Crows (which will take me a while), but this is at the top of my list after that.

Out on vacation and finally finished this book. I'll have to buy the next two right away.
I'll leave it around London during my travels and see where it ends up.
