I found this somewhat-battered paperback at the Used Book Superstore, and found the premise intriguing: in a distant future, humankind lives underground to survive an extreme ice age.
It turned out to be quite entertaining, if a bit more low-key (mostly) than I'd expected. It opens with a group of people living in the far-underground New York City, as their experiments with radio suddenly turn up contact with London - the first words from the world outside the city in living memory. But their community doesn't want anything to do with attempts to go outside, never mind contact other cities - far too dangerous...
Our heroes are convinced that the ice that sent them underground is retreating and that the surface may be open to travel, or even livable, and they get their chance to find out - when their officials sentence them to banishment. The rest of the book deals with their journey to the surface and what they find there, and their attempts to cope with all this using survival skills that they've only read about in ancient books. Entertaining little book!

Pulled out of the "I Hate SF Bookbox" because I loved the cover art. I hope the story is as captivating.
