I got this fair-condition paperback at the Used Book Superstore, as another release copy.

This is the first "Lord Peter" novel, and some have said it's their least favorite, but I like it very much - not least because of the truly macabre elements of the crime. It opens with Lord Peter being asked to assist a humble architect who's under suspicion of murder - because the body of a total stranger was found dead in the architect's bath, completely nude save for a gold pince-nez. Lord Peter can't resist so bizarre a crime, but as more information comes in, he begins to think there are some questions that shouldn't be answered... Many wonderful recurring characters are introduced here, including Lord Peter's perfect valet, Bunter, his indescribably wonderful mother the Dowager Duchess of Denver, and Charles Parker, good friend to Lord Peter and also an up-and-comer at Scotland Yard. And Sayers' blend of witty repartee and a singularly gruesome set of crimes appeals to me very much.

[See the TV Tropes page for the "Lord Peter" series for some entertaining tidbits.]

Unusual and ingenious plot; fun characters; interesting turns of phrase :-); somewhat unusual way of revealing whodunnit. What's not to like?

I hope to read more in this series.
