I hesitated to read this book. Typically, I don't like contemporary fiction by male authors; like guy movies, guy books usually have too much violence, sex and profanity for them to ring true to my life. This book had lots of vsp, and was stark and bleak, but, nevertheless, had a strong feeling of authenticity that kept me reading. Maybe it was the Australian setting that provided an other-worldly feel to the book, but, for some reason, I was able to accept, without flinching, the stark world Winton presented. With these cautions, I would recommend this book.

This book had lots of vsp, and was stark and bleak, but, nevertheless, had a strong feeling of authenticity. With these cautions, I recommend this book.
