I read this on recommendation. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. It was quite funny. However, towards the end the humour I enjoyed at the beginning but then it got a bit much, I mean, war isn't aways 'funny' all the time.

MAY 2004 Update - For those who are interested, the sequel to Catch 22 is 'Closing Time', about Yossarian and Co coping in the twilight of their life...

Release planned for Monday, October 27, 2003 at Released by mail to Bookcrosser in Felixstowe, UK in London, England United Kingdom.

It's a much fatter book than I thought it would be.
I saw the film many years ago and am looking forward to reading the book, it's on my TBR shelf right behind To Kill A Mockingbird.

Well, I finally finished this. It took me awhile to get into. I was already giving up, but then I read that this is one of the favorite books of Jasper Fforde (whose books I love). I liked the book once I got past the way they talked about women. I'm a feminist and had problems with that. But that luckily was a only a small part of the book. I liked the ending and it saved a lot. I think the book really showed the pointlessness of war and that also raised my opinion of the book. But I think the book could've been a lot better if the author would cut about 200 pages of it. There was a lot of repetition and at some points the humor just wasn't funny anymore, but annoying. Well, I'm glad I decided to read the book anyway. It was worth reading in the end.

I'll be sending this one to Banshee in a few days.

Journal Entry 14 by Banshee on Friday, September 3, 2004
Found it in my mail yesterday.
I didn't know the story was located in Pianosa and Italy! Now I'm even more interested in reading it.

Journal Entry 15 by Banshee on Monday, September 27, 2004
very interesting, describes the insanity of war and bureaucracy in a funny and serious way, similar to Vonnegut.
the book is leaving to RonOren, since MClaraM and Moondancer11 can't read it now.

Journal Entry 16 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Monday, October 4, 2004
Got it in the mail on Saturday and I'm halfway through it. So far, I can say it started out quite strangely, but turned interesting, funny and ery captivating after a few chapters. I'll see if anything changes when I finish it...

Journal Entry 17 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Friday, October 8, 2004
It's an interesting mix of humour and cynism. I have to admit, the humour makes it an easy read; sometimes it get grotesque, especially whenever Milo is on one of his runs, or when Colonel Cathcart is described. But there's definitely a wry second meaning, where Heller attacks the war with all his literary might.
In a way, I'd say Orr is symbolic for the book, the message: odd and grotesque at first sight, but with a cunning vision of the war; a vision that is not that hidden, if you know where to look...

Well, on to more mundane matters: it's going on to Eucalia. Hope s/he likes it as much as I did!
Seeing as how I plan to drop it off at the Post Office tomorrow, I'll declare it travelling already.

Journal Entry 18 by Eucalia from Issaquah, Washington USA on Monday, October 25, 2004
This book arrived in the mail today. I have one bookring ahead of it, but I'm looking forward to reading this one!

Journal Entry 19 by Eucalia from Issaquah, Washington USA on Saturday, January 1, 2005
I apologize to everyone for holding on to this book for so long. During the reading of this book I moved 800 miles and started a new job so I've been very busy. But I did finish it a few days ago. Reading this book reminded me a bit of reading something by Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett in that a lot of random-seeming off-the-wall things happened for no apparent reason. Also the timeline in this story was not straightforward. The story was told relatively quickly in the beginning and then holes were filled in as the book progressed. For these two reasons and the fact that it was a bit depressing in it's outlook on humanity, I had some trouble getting into the book. But it also had enjoyable bits and some pretty thought-provoking points thrown in. I'm glad I finally had the chance to read this book. Thanks for sharing with me and thanks for your patience! I already have the address for the next participant and will mail the book when the post office opens on Monday.

RELEASE NOTES:

I mailed this book to the next person on the list this morning. It's in the same package as another bookring book that I happened to finish right after this one. It turned out the same person is after me on that list as on this one. What are the odds of that?

Journal Entry 21 by alanfoxboro from Searcy, Arkansas USA on Saturday, January 8, 2005
I received this book in the mail today. Thanks to redhouse for the bookray. I will read it and post a review ASAP.

Journal Entry 22 by alanfoxboro from Searcy, Arkansas USA on Sunday, March 6, 2005
I thought Catch-22 was a great book. It was very enjoyable to read, although the time line was a little confusing, as others have mentioned. Yossarian was one of the most likeable characters I have encountered in a long time. I look forward to reading the sequel.

Thanks again to redhouse for the bookray. This book is going out in the mail tomorrow to aramena.

Journal Entry 23 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Saturday, March 12, 2005
Arrived yesterday, and great timing, I'm actually low on rings/rays at the moment!

Journal Entry 24 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Friday, March 18, 2005
Well, I made it through 162 pages and finally just put it down. For the most part I just can't stay interested in it and my mind seems to wander while I'm reading and it just won't stick with me. I'm a little disappointed cause I'd heard so much about it, I expected to enjoy it more. Oh well! I've PMd the next person today for their address.

Journal Entry 25 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Wednesday, April 6, 2005
I still have the book in my possession. Moondancer11 said to skip her, so I PMd MClaraM on 3/19/05 and have gotten no response. I have PMd her again today. Since this is a ray and not a ring, I assume redhouse does not want the book back, so if I do not get a response from MClaraM this time, I'll check wish lists or offer on the forum.

Journal Entry 26 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Wednesday, April 13, 2005
MClaraM did respond to my second PM, she had not received the first one, and after a slight delay on my part in being able to get to the post office, the book is being sent to her today!

Journal Entry 27 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Monday, July 11, 2005
This book was returned to me by the Postal Service! Someone has written in red ink across the address, it looks like "remetonto", which is maybe Portuguese for "return to sender"? I don't know. I PMd MClaraM to see what is going on.

Journal Entry 28 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Monday, July 18, 2005
Book will be on it's way to blaisezabini12 tomorrow!

Journal Entry 29 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Friday, July 22, 2005
Okay, I was a little off -- I didn't make it to the post office until today, so it is on it's way now!

Journal Entry 30 by rem_DUV-129661 on Tuesday, August 2, 2005
This book was picked up by my brother from the post office. I have just returned from Italy and it was one of the many books waiting for me home:) Will read as soon as possible!
