from the back:

"After the body of a wealthy elderly woman is found brutally murdered in her apartment, the authorities suspect her maid, who is on the run with a large sum of money. But when the maid herself meets an untimely end trying to escape from border police, and it appears that the money may not have been stolen, Commissario Guido Brunetti decides - unofficially - to take the case on himself. Could it be that the crime was not motivated by greed but by another deadly sin - lust? Filled with Leon's signature plot twists, Doctored Evidence is a terrific novel of suspense that once more finds Commissario Brunetti and his indispensable secretary, Signorina Elettra, navigating the murky waters of Venetian society."

Part of the appeal of these books is the conversation between Brunetti and his wife Paola. Paola is a literature professor and she always introduces some interesting side topic, that often turns out to have relevance to Brunetti's case, of course.

In this story, she was meditating on the Seven Deadly Sins - rather, that they aren't considered so deadly anymore, or even so sinful. Lust is her first example, as the most obvious. We get hit with it every time we watch a movie or see an ad. Gluttony is another example; we live in a virulently consumeristic society, where most of us see nothing wrong with wanting more and more. I still would enjoy the mysteries on their own merit but it's also nice that Paola makes me think.
