Spring 1917. In war-ravaged northern France, Michael Courtney, a dashing aviator flying for the British, falls in love with a beautiful young French aristocrat, Centaine de Thiry. Their happiness is short-lived, and their hope of a life together in the Africa of Michael's birth perish in the blazing skies above the grim battlefields of the Somme.
Alone and destitute, Centaine determines that the child she carries will be born in Africa. Michael's uncle; General Sean Courtney, arranges her passage to Cape Town, but a U-Boat torpedoes the hospital ship on which she is journeying and she is cast on the forbidding shore of the Namibian Desert......
