Sir John Cranston, coroner of London, is challenged to resolve a certain murder mystery within two weeks. He seeks the help of his faithful secretarius, Brother Athelstan. However, Athelstan has problems of his own. At St Erconwald's, renovation work at the sanctuary has unearthed a skeleton.
