The Welsh coast basks in summer tranquility, then the drownings begin... Not until the monstrous crustaceans crawl ashore, their pincers poised for destruction, does the world understand the threat it faces....

Guy Newman Smith (born 1939, Hopwas, Staffordshire) is a prolific English writer best known for his pulp fiction-style horror fiction, though he has also written non-fiction, soft-porn, and children's literature..

He is probably best known for a series of six Crabs books, the first of which, Night of the Crabs, was published in 1976. The series chronicles invasions by giant, man-eating crabs of various areas of British coastline.

The pulpish nature of Smith's concepts and writing are legendary in the horror fiction world, and have been spoofed by the award winning comedian and writer Matthew Holness in his Garth Marenghi persona.

Smith's work mixes sex, violence, gore and self-conscious humour. Despite his reputation in some quarters as being a hack writer, Smith's novels enjoyed considerable popularity in Poland in the early 1990s, having been cheaply translated and published as pocket editions by the Amber publishing house.

Read this book during my journey from Hanoi to Wuhun via Guangzhou airport.

Professor Cliff Davenport goes to investigate the disappearance of his nephew and fiance. He sees evidence of the giant crabs, but has a difficult time convincing the authorities that they exist. Of course there is an attractive woman staying in the same hotel as him who immediately trusts him, resulting in sex scenes in a similar way that a James Herbert horror story must contain the obligatory sex.

Do not an intellectual plot or complicated story line: the crabs show themselves, kill lots of people, appear undefeatable, Davenport saves the day in the end. It is a good fun way to pass the time when you are after some light entertainment.

Being back home in Foshan, I have entered this book into round 5 of the first sentences virtual book box .

So someone will select the book based solely on this first sentence:

"The sunlight sparkled and shimmered on the deep blue of the incoming tide, the waves lapping gently at the harbour wall".
