Camera Obscura (Angry Robot)

CAN'T FIND A RATIONAL EXPLANATION TO A MYSTERY? CALL IN THE QUIET COUNCIL. The mysterious and glamorous Lady De Winter is one of their most valuable agents. A despicable murder inside a locked and bolted room on the Rue Morgue in Paris is just the start. This whirlwind adventure will take Milady to the highest and lowest parts of that great city - and cause her to question the very nature of reality itself.
“Camera Obscura is dark, violent, and a fine steampunk thriller that’ll stick to your ribs in a way other thrillers don’t. It’s stuffed to the gills with action and plot…the world-building is deftly done. And Tidhar’s Milady de Winter is fantastic. If you like steampunk or just action in general, it’s well worth a read.”

I'm taking this book from emmejo's Steampunk bookbox; I've enjoyed a couple of other titles from this publisher, and the mention of the Rue Morgue in Paris definitely caught my attention. Not sure how much Poe-homage there will be here beyond that reference, but I figured it's worth a try! [Love the steampunk label design, loriped!]
Later: Lots of fun playing spot-the-reference, here, from The Three Musketeers to the steampunk version of the Chicago World's Fair to "Dear Viktor". Main character Lady de Winter is a skilled secret agent and assassin, and her talents (not to mention her ability to withstand pain) are tested to the limit here. I enjoyed the many little touches, too, such as the forensic automaton called Grimm, which crawls inside the bodies to perform its examinations; some of the CSI folk might like that one!
