This book tells the story of Jabez Clegg, a well know name in Manchester (well, I recognise the name from the pub of the same name off Oxford Road!).
This is a really enjoyable book detailing Jabez's life from being fished out of a river as a baby to his rise in the ranks of industry and the community. The book is written in a lot of local dialect which can be a bit difficult to read initially but you very quickly get over that as the story is so compelling and is also a great lesson in the social history of the area with events such as the Peterloo massacre covered within the book.
A great book and one that I could recommend to anyone with an interest in the history of Manchester or who enjoys a good rags to riches story.
